#6 Wheaton Downs Southern Maine 8-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Wheaton College sophomore right-hander Mike McGinnis (Mashpee, Mass.) combined with two relievers to limit the University of Southern Maine to four hits to lead the sixth-ranked Lyons to their 10th straight win with a 9-2 triumph over the Huskies in non-conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.
McGinnis retired the first 17 USM hitters before nicking sophomore Matt Powers (Portland, Maine/Deering) with a pitch. The second-year hurler would work into the seventh inning before giving way to relievers David Longley (Brunswick, Maine) and Ben Johnson (Cambridge, Mass.) who combined for three innings of shutout relief.
Junior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H.) and rookie Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I.) paced the Lyons' 14-hit attack with three hits apiece. Jensen had three singles, scored three runs and had one RBI while De la Cruz had a double and two singles. Senior Hal Landers (Salem, N.H.) and junior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass.) each had two hits.
USM senior David Ricker (Winthrop, Maine) broke up McGinnis' no-hit bid with a double down the left field line after Powers was struck by a pitch for the Huskies first run. Junior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine) led off the seventh with a double and scored when sophomore Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) followed with a single that chased McGinnis from the mound. McGinnis gave up only three hits and no walks while striking out four.
Senior Dustin Stanton (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) started on the hill for the Huskies and was tagged with his third loss of the season. Stanton went 3.1 innings allowing seven hits, six runs (five earned) and no walks while fanning three.
Wheaton reached Stanton for three markers in the opening inning as Landers singled and Jensen singled and took second when the throw went in to third base trying to get Landers. Junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass.) plated the first run with a groundout, and senior Dan Haugh (Andover, Mass.) drove in Jensen with a sacrifice fly. De la Cruz doubled and came in on a Gusovsky single for the third run.
The Lyons picked up an unearned run in the second, and three more in the fourth to increase their lead to 7-0. Landers had an RBI double in the fourth, and scored on Jensen's RBI single. Jensen would score on a Ryan sacrifice fly.
