GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced Monday afternoon that University of Southern Maine freshman left-handed pitcher Tyler Leavitt (North Andover, Mass.) has been named Rookie of the Week for the week of April 22-28. Leavitt is the fifth USM baseball player, and second rookie, to receive a weekly citation from the Little East Conference this spring.
The rookie southpaw helped USM clinch the top seed in the upcoming LEC tournament hurling eight shutout innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Western Connecticut State University on Sunday. Leavitt allowed only five hits and two walks while striking out five to earn his fourth win of the season. The Huskies went on to sweep Western Connecticut, 10-0 and 15-2 (7 innings), to secure their second straight, and fourth outright, regular season title.
For the season, Leavitt is now 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA. He has pitched 30.0 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on 23 hits and six walks while striking out 17. Opponents are hitting just .219 against him.
Southern Maine, 29-6 overall and 11-1 in conference play, will be at home tomorrow (4:00 p.m.) hosting Bowdoin College in a non-conference game.
USM will host the 2013 LEC Baseball Championship Tournament, a six-team, double-elimination event, at the USM Baseball Stadium on May 8-11.
