Bates Blanks Southern Maine 3-0

            LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College Bobcats scored three goals within a span of 7:56 midway through the first half to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-0, in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday afternoon.

            Winning its second game in its last three tries, Bates improves to 3-7.  Suffering its third straight loss, Southern Maine falls to 5-10.

            Junior midfielder Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket) and sophomore forward Michelle Brady (Milton, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) scored goals 41 seconds apart to quickly spot the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.  Beaton's goal came from a Brady assist 17:16 into the game, and Brady quickly followed with an unassisted goal at 17:57.

            Sophomore forward Laura Baran (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) capped the Bates' scoring outburst in the 26th minute knocking in a goal off an assist from senior forward Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I./Lincoln School).

            Bates' senior Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Friends) earned the shutout victory making five saves.  USM senior goalkeeper Rachel Lolley (Gorham, Maine) made one save before giving way to freshman Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) who finished the game for the Huskies making nine saves.

            Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a Little East Conference game.  Bates College hosts Wesleyan University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
