GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Cody Berkowitz (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team has been named the team's captain for the 2010 season. USM head coach Reggie Grant made the announcement as the Huskies prepare for their opening match against the St. Joseph's College Monks on Wednesday (2:00 p.m.). The Huskies will host the Monks at the Sable Oaks Golf Club in South Portland, Maine.
In his third season, Berkowitz has been one of the Huskies top players over the past two seasons. In 2009, Berkowitz averaged 83.6 strokes in 12 rounds. He shot a career-best 76 during the Bowdoin College Invitational.
As a freshman in 2008, Berkowitz was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Co-Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the GNAC All-Championship team with his top five finish in the conference championship. Berkowitz averaged a score of 82.0 over 11 rounds.
Berkowitz's leadership and experience will be vital for the Huskies. USM returns just three golfers from last season.
Following the Huskies' match against St. Joseph's College, they will compete in eight different tournaments before venturing into championship play. Among the tournaments are the annual USM sponsored events, the USM Fall Classic on Sunday and Monday, September 26-27 (12:00 and 10:00 a.m.) and the Southern Maine Cup on Friday, October 1 (11:30 a.m.). Both events will be hosted at the Sable Oaks Golf Club.
Following the Southern Maine Cup, USM will prepare for the NEIGA Championship on October 18-19 at the Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass. Southern Maine will compete in the GNAC Championship on October 30-31 at Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence, Rhode Island.
