Huskies Finish Fourth at UMF Invitational
FARMINGTON, Maine – Freshman A.J. Simokaitis (Falmouth, Maine) finished tied for ninth place in with a team-best 80 to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a fourth place finish at the 2011 University of Maine Farmington Invitational Thursday at the Sunday River Golf Club in Bethel, Maine.
Husson University won the event with a 301 followed by the University of New England (321) and St. Joseph's College in third (328). The Huskies finished fourth in the nine-team event with a 333. UMaine Farmington and the University of Maine Presque Isle tied for fifth place at 339.
Husson's Chris Hamel and Mike Hersey each carded a 72 to lead the field and tie for first place. Simokaitis paced the Huskies shooting a 40 on the opening nine and matching his score on the back nine for an 80. Senior Nick Mullins (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) finished the invitational with an 83 followed by senior Brett Kapetina (Stanford, Conn.) with an 84. Junior Josh Hogan (Falmouth, Maine) rounded out the scoring for Southern Maine with an 86. The Huskies' fifth golfer was senior captain Cody Berkowitz (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) who turned in a 91 for the Huskies.
Southern Maine returns to action at the Maine State Championship on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) at Val Halla Country Club in Cumberland, Maine.
