Three Huskies Earn All-GNAC Honors

GORHAM, Maine  - Senior Brett Kapteina (Stamford, Conn.), junior Josh Hogan (Falmouth, Maine) and freshman A.J. Simokaitis (Falmouth, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team have each earned All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference honors. 

         Kapteina, Hogan and Simokaitis each finished in the top five at the 2011 GNAC Golf Championship hosted this past weekend by St. Joseph's College at the Gorham Country Club in Gorham, Maine.  The Huskies trio paced Southern Maine to a second place finish with score of 609 strokes.  The Huskies finished just three strokes off of Rhode Island College, which claimed the 2011 conference title. 

         Simokaitis finished second overall out of 40 golfers carding a two-day total of 147 (75-72).  Simokaitis' second round 72 was the low-round score of the day and was just one stroke over part at the 6,555-yard course.  Hogan finished third, just two strokes away from Simokaitis with a score of 149 (76-73), while Kapteina turned in his best performance of the season to place third with a 151 (75-76). 

         Both Hogan and Kapteina were named to this week's GNAC Golf Weekly honor roll for their performances at the championship tournament.   Simokaitis earned GNAC weekly honors early in the season (Oct. 3). 

         Southern Maine competes at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship beginning Monday.  The two-day event will be played at the Captains Golf Club in Brewster, Mass.
