Torris, Conter Receive ECAC Men's East Postseason Accolades

GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team were among the recipients of postseason recognition when Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) commissioner Rudy Keeling announced the league's all-conference teams and awards recently following a vote by the coaches.

Freshman goalie Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) was named to a spot on the All-Rookie team while senior defenseman Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) was one of five players to receive honorable mention all-conference recognition.

A mainstay between the pipes this season, Torris has complied a 2.94 goals against average with a .918 save percentage and a 7-10-5 record.  He has two shutouts during the season.  In last Saturday's 4-1 quarterfinal round upset of the third-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons, Torris made 60 saves, one shy of the single-game record, and establish a new single-season record for most saves with 715.

One of the top offensive defenseman in the league, Conter received league recognition for the fourth straight year.  He was a member of the All-Rookie team in 2007-08, a second-team conference pick as a sophomore and a first team selection last year.  Conter leads the Huskies in scoring with 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points.  He has scored a team-leading four power-play goals, and presently sits sixth on the Huskies all-time scoring list with 95 points (33g, 62a).

Heading into this weekend's ECAC East semifinal, Torris ranks second among conference goalies in overall save percentage, and Conter is tied for the top spot in scoring by defenseman.

"I'm very happy for (Torris) and (Conter)," commented veteran head coach Jeff Beaney.  "(Torris) came in and quickly established himself as one of the top goaltenders in the league.  And (Conter) has been among the league's elite offensive defensemen since coming here four years ago."

The Huskies (8-12-5), making their first appearance in the semifinals since 2006, will play top-seeded Norwich University (18-5-3) this Friday (4:00 p.m.) in the opening semifinal game of the ECAC Men's East tournament at Northfield, Vt.  Second-seeded Castleton State College (22-3-1) will face off against fifth-seeded Babson College (10-13-3) in the second semifinal.  The two winners will battle for the title, and an automatic berth in the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship tournament, on Saturday (7:00 p.m.).
