Babson Blanks Southern Maine 2-0
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College scored twice early in the third period and junior goaltender Bryan Botcher (Mequon, Wis.) made 33 saves to record his first shutout of the season as the Beavers blanked the University of Southern Maine Huskies 2-0 in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Babson Skating Center.
With the win, Babson improved to 10-6-2 overall and 8-3-1 in conference play, while Southern Maine slipped to 3-10-4 overall and 3-6-3 in the NEHC.
Seniors Rob Devaney (Reading, Mass.) and Ryan Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) both scored, while classmates Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Josh Casper (Lake Forest, Ill.) added assists for the Beavers. Junior Matt Brazel (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan McDougall (Milton, Mass.) also recorded an assist apiece in the victory.
First-year goaltender Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) finished with 25 saves for the Huskies.
Following two scoreless periods, Devaney got the Green and White on the board with his sixth goal of the year just 2:49 into the third. McDougall held the puck in the zone at the blue line along the left-side boards and threw a puck on net that was tipped in by Devaney.
The Beavers doubled their advantage less than four minutes later when Gouveia cleaned up a rebound for his team-leading ninth goal of the season at the 6:44 mark. Casper's shot from the left point sent D'Aloisio sprawling to the ice and Gouveia was on the doorstep to poke home.
Southern Maine, which outshot Babson 33-27, went 0-for-3 on the power play over the first two periods. The Huskies pulled D'Aloisio with 2:28 to go in the third and had 62 seconds of a 6-on-4 power play, which was followed by 58 seconds of a 6-on-3 advantage, but were unable to solve Botcher. He made 16 of his 33 saves over the final 20 minutes to win for the third time in as many starts this winter.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Babson hosts Amherst in its final non-conference game of the season, while Southern Maine travels to Bowdoin College.
