Endicott Rallies to Down Southern Maine 13-10
GORHAM, Maine -- Graduate student Jon Thanas (Cumberland, R.I./Wheeler School) and rookie Harrison Cotter (Lordship, Conn./Fairfield Prep) each scored three goals as the visiting Endicott College Gulls came from behind to defeat the upset-minded University of Southern Maine Huskies 13-10 in a non-conference men's lacrosse match Thursday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win was the fifth in the last six games for the Gulls, and improved their overall record to 6-4. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight game to slide to 3-5 on the season.
Thanas and Cotter each had an assist to go along with their three goals. Seven other players recorded one goal for the Gulls. Junior Sam Ozycz (Cheshire, Conn.) dominated at the X winning 17 of 24 faceoffs and scooping up a game-high 12 ground balls. Junior goalie Tom Burke (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) registered nine saves in the cage.
Junior Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) led the Huskies with four goals and an assist for a five-point game. Senior Nate Prince (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) and junior Ryan Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) each had two goals. Junior goalie Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), making his first start of the season, stopped 11 shots in 51:19 before giving way to junior Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine). Dussault did not record a save over the final 8:41.
The Huskies got off to a strong start in the first quarter taking a 5-1 lead over the Gulls. White had three goals, and Prince two, in the opening 15 minutes. Sophomore Jake Heger (Longmeadow, Mass.) had the lone markers for the Gulls.
Cotter took charge in the second quarter scoring three consecutive goals to cut the margin to one. Rookie Joshua Tordik (Sayville, N.Y.) tied the game with 1:38 remaining in the quarter, but the Huskies came right back 18 seconds later to regain the lead on a goal from Foley.
After the halftime break, Thanas and Foley exchanged goals leaving the Huskies with a slim 7-6 edge five minutes into the third quarter. Thanas and senior Brendan Eppley (Darien, Conn.) scored to give the Gulls their first lead in the game with 8:28 to go in the third. Senior Dan Thomas (Shrewsbury, Mass.) equalized for the Huskies at the 6:46 mark. The Gulls would take the lead for good junior Peter Erickson (Yarmouth, Maine) scored a man-down goal.
The Gulls put the game away midway through the final quarter with a three-goal outburst within a span of 40 seconds. Rookie Jeremy Morgan (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood), junior Kyle Burke (Haverhill, Mass.) and Thanas found the net to expand the Gulls lead from 10-8 to 13-10.
White and senior Derek Guimond (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored for the Huskies in the final five minutes to close the gap.
Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. Endicott will host Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
