James Soules Named LEC Defensive Player of the Week

GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference office announced Monday afternoon that University of Southern Maine junior long-stick midfielder James Soules (Scarborough, Maine) has been named the LEC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 23-29.  The weekly citation is the first of Soules' collegiate career.

Soules played a major role in the Huskies winning two critical LEC games last week to secure a spot in the championship tournament.  He averaged eight ground balls and five caused turnovers in wins over the University of Massachusetts Boston and Salem State University.

In the Huskies' 11-4 triumph over UMB, Soules scooped up six ground balls and caused six Beacon turnovers.  Four days later against Salem State, Soules was credited with 10 ground balls and caused four Viking turnovers in a 12-8 victory.

On the season, Soules has gathered a team-high 99 ground balls, smashing his single-season record of 78 set last year, and caused 35 opponent turnovers.  He also has one goal and two assists, and has played in all 15 games.

Southern Maine, 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the LEC, is the fifth seed in the LEC tournament and will travel to fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (9-5, 3-4) on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) for a first-round game.
