BOSTON – Jake Higgins scored in the first, and Jake Davenport scored in the second half to lead the UMass Boston Beacons to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at James Cotter Field.
Winning its third straight, UMass Boston improves to 7-2-2 overall and 3-1 in the Little East. Southern Maine is now 5-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.
Higgins broke open a scoreless game putting a shot on frame in the 32nd minute following a cross from Eric Murakami. Higgins' goal was his first of the season, and UMB made it stand through the half. USM had the first noteworthy attempt in the fifth minute, but freshman Joseph Kalilwa's (Lewiston, Maine) attempt missed just wide of the net.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of UMB until late in the second half when Davenport doubled up the Beacons' advantage with his fifth goal of the season in the 74th minute. Davenport finished a double assist from Jonathan Cardoso and Denis Martinez to the far post.
USM freshman goalkeeper Richard Glemawu (Accra, Ghana/South Kent, Conn.)) turned in a strong performance for the Huskies making seven saves. Aidan Carter earned his second victory of the season making one save for the shutout. UMB finished the game with a 16-6 advantage in shots and a 7-0 lead in corner kicks.
Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday at home against Pine Manor College (1:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game. UMass Boston travels to Springfield College on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) in a non-conference match up.
