Southern Maine Wins Poyau Memorial Invitational

            WALTHAM, Mass. -- On the strength of seven first-place finishes, the University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field team won the 2011 Reggie Poyau Memorial Track Meet, hosted by Brandeis University, for the second straight year on Saturday.

            The Huskies scored 170 points to win the five-team event.  Amherst College finished in second with 161 points, followed by Brandeis in third with 111.  Lasell College was fourth with 24, followed by the University of Massachusetts Boston in fifth with 22.

            Senior Matt Harmon (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) earned two first-place finishes for the Huskies, winning the shot put and weight throw.  In the shot put, Harmon's distance of 13.27 meters (43 feet, 6 1/2 inches) was more than two meters better than his closest competitor.  Harmon's toss of 13.21 meters (43-4 1/4) in the weight throw outdistanced his nearest rival by four meters.

            Sophomore Ryan Storey (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and senior John Davis (Westbrook, Maine) gave the Huskies a pair of first-place finishes in field events.  Storey claimed the top spot in the high jump clearing 1.85 meters (6-0 3/4), while Davis took the top spot in the pole vault, clearing 4.10 meters (13-5 1/4).

            On the track, all three of USM's first-place finishers met New England Division III Championships qualifying standards.  Freshman Julian Gazzelloni (Windham, Maine) won the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 0.35 seconds, while junior Parker Chipman (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) won the 400 meters in 51.13 seconds.  Senior Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) claimed the top spot in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.39 seconds.

            Southern Maine competes at the Bates College Invitational on Friday (5:00 p.m.) and Saturday (11:00 a.m.).  The two-day meet continues on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).
