Moody Wins Bates Heptathlon

LEWISTON, Maine -- University of Southern Maine junior C.J. Moody (Old Town, Maine) turned in a strong second-day performance on Saturday to win the two-day, seven-event heptathlon at the Bates College Invitational.

Moody posted the best performance in two of the three events that make up the Saturday portion of the heptathlon.  He cleared 3.60 meters (11-9 ¾) in the pole vault and had the quickest time in the final event, the 1,000 meters, crossing the line in 2 minutes, 54.92 seconds.  Moody had the second best time among the competitors in the opening event, the 60-meter hurdles, at 9.11 seconds.

For the seven events, Moody scored a total of 4,639 points to easily outdistance runner-up Sage Bailin of Colby College by more than 600 points.  Moody's total was less than 100 points off the school record.

The Huskies will compete next weekend at the USM Open III meet at the Costello Sports Complex.
