Gamage, Helderman, Hoyle and Moody Earn Recognition

GORHAM, Maine -- Four members of the University of Southern Maine men's track and field team were cited for recognition this week when the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its annual list of All-Region honorees for the 2017-18 indoor track and field season.

Receiving USTFCCCA All-Region recognition are junior Drew Gamage (Sabbatus, Maine/Oak Hill), senior Ron Helderman (Madison, Maine), freshman Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) and junior C.J. Moody (Old Town, Maine).

The top five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the region's top-3 relay teams.  A total of 772 awards were bestowed to athletes from men's programs.

Gamage finished the indoor season ranked fifth in the triple jump with his mark of 14.32 meters (46-11 ¾) at the New England Alliance/Little East Conference Championships.  Helderman is receiving his third All-Region honor for being the top ranked competitor in the pole vault based upon his height of 4.90 meters (16-0 ¾) at the season-opening USM Open I meet.  Hoyle, USM's lone male competitor at this year's NCAA Division III National Championships, is ranked fifth in the 800 meters with his converted time of 1 minute, 51.87 seconds.  Moody ranks fourth in the heptathlon with his career best score of 4,688 points at the New England Division III Championships.

Hoyle will compete in the preliminary races of the 800 meters on Friday at the NCAA Division III National Championships in Birmingham, Alabama.  The final will be Saturday afternoon.

USM will open its 2018 spring outdoor season on March 31 at the Snowflake Invitational at Tufts University.
