Huskies Get First Win; Split with UMass Dartmouth 2-4 and 4-0
With the split, Southern Maine stands at 1-17 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference. The Corsairs are 6-12 and 2-2 in the conference.
Led by Davis' three hits, Southern Maine cranked out 12 hits en route to the win. USM opened the game with 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Caitlin LeBorgne (Scarborough, Maine) singled in junior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) who led off the inning with a base hit.
Stockwell helped her own cause earning her first win of the season in the circle for USM. The right-handed pitcher picked up the shut out victory limiting the Corsairs to just three hits in seven innings of work. Stockwell finished the game fanning seven UMD hitters while yielding just two walks.
Davis spotted USM a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when she cranked out her first home run of the season to lead off the inning. Davis continued to pace the Huskies offensively accounting for her teams final two runs with her third hit of the game – a two-run single up the middle – to plate sophomore Annie Mitchell (Gorham, Maine) and Stockwell. Stockwell reached safely with a double to center field, while Mitchell legged out an infield hit to set the table for Davis.
In the first game, UMass Dartmouth used four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Diane Barry (Norwood, Mass.) started the Corsairs off with a solo home run. The Corsairs then received RBIs from freshmen Olivia Kenyon (Canton, Mass.), Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, Mass.) and junior Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, Mass.).
Held scoreless through the first six innings, Southern Maine threatened with two runs in the top of the seventh with two-out RBI singles from sophomores Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) and Meghan Rumore (Manchester, N.H.), but senior Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) was able to get the fly out to retire the side and get the win.
Eldridge finished the game holding USM to just five hits. She struck out six and allowed just one walk.
