Western Connecticut Sweeps Southern Maine

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 29) - Senior short stop Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY) collected her 200th career hit and the Western Connecticut State University softball team swept University of Southern Maine, 8-0, in five innings, and 4-0 in its home finale on Sunday afternoon at Westside Field.
Basciano's collected the coveted hit in first at bat against the Huskies. Southern Maine third baseman Katie Davis (Woburn, MA) had to lunge to her right and backhand the single by Basciano and it caromed off her mitt.
On the day, the two-time Little East Conference Player of the Year, went 2-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI. In the nightcap, she drove in three runs with a double down the left field line.
In the opener, Western scattered nine hits and took advantage of five Southern Maine errors in the four-run fourth inning.
Senior first baseman Samantha Avery (Rocky Hill, CT) led the hitting attack by going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. Classmate Jackie Zilnicki (Riverhead, NY) went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored in the opener.
Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT), one of seven seniors playing in their final home contest, earned the victory in both games and is now 18-7 on the season. In game one, she went four innings, allowed two hits, struck out five (including the first three batters in the game) and walked two.
Stephanie Moss (Brookfield, CT) mopped up in the top of the fifth inning.
For USM, Caitlin LeBorgne (Scarborough, ME), Emily Tremblay (Old Town, ME) and Kayle DeMillo (Jay, ME) each had a hit.
LeBorgne suffered the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and surviving only two-thirds of an inning. Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, ME) came on and allowed five runs, but only two of them were earned, on five hits. She struck out three and walked a pair.
In game two, the Colonials, 27-13 overall and 7-7 in the LEC, had six hits and scored three runs in the second inning and never looked back.
In that frame, Basciano drilled the ball just inside the left field like to plate Avery, senior Kristen Ferrante (New Paltz, NY) and Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT).
Western added an insurance run in the fourth off starter and loser Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, ME). She is now 3-16 on the season.
Senior right fielder Melissa Fracker (Sandy Hook, CT), who laced a one-out double to the game in right, came around to score on a Stockwell wild pitch.
Dargon went the distance allowing four hits while striking out eight.
The Colonials have earned the fifth seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament, which begins on Thursday at Eastern Connecticut State University in Mansfield, CT. They will take on either Rhode Island College or Keene State College at 2 pm in the first round action.
The Anchorwomen and Owls play late on Sunday to determine the second and third seeds for the tournament.
