GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) scored a game-high six goals to help the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team pull away in the second half for a 16-9 victory over Western Connecticut State University in Little East Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win snapped the Huskies' four-game losing streak, and improved their record to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Colonials had their four-game winning string snapped to fall to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in LEC play.
Kelly led all scorers with seven points on six goals and one assist. Rookie Julia Pearl (Essex Jct., Vt.) added four goals and an assist, and sophomore Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) had three goals and equaled the school single-game record with nine draw controls. Sophomore goalie Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) played an outstanding game making 15 saves.
Junior Nicole Perrone (Brookfield, Conn.) led the Colonials with three goals. Sophomore Kirsten Hudock (Newtown, Conn.) and senior Kaitlyn Arconti (Danbury, Conn.) each contributed two goals. Sophomore goalie Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) registered 14 stops between the pipes.
The teams battled through a tightly played first half finishing the 30 minutes in a 5-5 deadlock. Kelly paced the Huskies with three goals while Perrone and Hudock each had two for the Colonials.
Southern Maine got off to a quick start in the second half tallying three consecutive goals to take an 8-5 lead with 25:37 to play. Pearl, Kelly and Forster accounted for the USM goals.
Arconti snapped the run of USM goals with her first marker of the day. Her second goal five minutes later pulled Western Conn. back within three (11-8) with 17:06 remaining.
The Huskies would out score the Colonials 5-1 over the final 14 minutes to inch away. The Huskies converted four free-position attempts down the stretch.
Southern Maine is back in action Sunday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Bates College. Western Connecticut travels to Worcester State University on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
