HARTFORD, Conn.  – Senior Billy Cole (Madbury, N.H./Oyster River) and sophomore Travis Spencer (Waldo, Maine/Belfast Area) each earned a spot in the finals to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first day of competition of the 2011 New England Wrestling Association Championship hosted by Trinity College Saturday in Hartford, Conn.

Wrestling at 133-pounds, Cole earned two wins by fall and a hard-fought decision to earn his right to grapple for the 133-pound title.  Cole started the day pinning Western New England's Andrew Munson in 1:03, before battling Williams' Ken Tanabe for a 10-8 decision.  Cole then took down Bridgewater State's Sean McCarthy in 4:36.  With his three victories, Cole, a 2010 Pilgrim League Wrestling First Team All-Star, is guaranteed All-New England honors.

At 197-pounds, Spencer earned his spot in the championship finals in impressive fashion earning one of his three victories of the day over two-time NCAA All-American and NCAA finalist Ryan Malo of Williams College in a tough 2-1 win by decision.  Spencer, who earned All-New England honors in 2010 finishing sixth, won all three of his matches by decision including a 12-0 major decision victory over Rhode Island College's Adam Lynch.

Southern Maine continues at the NEWA Championship on Sunday (8:45 a.m.).
