Del Gallo, a two-time all-region wrestler, earned a pair of wins by fall. Del Gallo pinned Castleton's Tyler Raetz in 1:14 to vault the Huskies' ahead of the Spartans 25-20 in the opening match to earn the win. Southern Maine had trailed the Spartans 20-19 heading into the final bout, but Del Gallo delivered the final points for the win.
USM fell behind Castleton 16-5 after the first five matches, before rattling off wins at 285, 125, and 141 before the pivotal victory at 149. Sophomore Mike Risti (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) started the rally with a win by injury default at 285 made it 16-11 in favor of Castleton. Freshman Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) earned his first collegiate win earning a major decision win over Castleton's Tyreek Staton 12-2, putting USM within a point at 16-15. Castleton took the 133 bout by major decision to lead 20-15, before sophomore Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and Del Gallo went back-to-back for the win. Weir earned a win by major decision, 11-3, at 141 pounds over Castleton's Zak Hale.
Against BSU, USM led from the start as Luth continued his strong start to the season earning his second by technical fall, 19-0 (5:59), overpowering the Bears Andrew Szilagyi for a 5-0 USM lead. Freshman Zach Thompson (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) earned his first collegiate victory, 8-1, over BSU's Erick Kerr at 165 pounds, before senior Steven Corio (Manville, R.I./Lincoln) and Risti each won by decision at 197 and 285 respectively. Corio took a 12-3 win over BSU's Stephen Heaslip, while Risti slipped away with a 2-0 win over Tom Arsenault.
Peter Del Gallo finished the day 2-0 earning his first collegiate pin, putting BSU's Adam Hunt to the mat in 2:13, while Weir took a 10-0 major decision over the Bears' Brett Layton. Daniel Del Gallo closed out the match with his second win by fall, 3:31, over Jacob Mullin-Bernstein.
Southern Maine is back in action on Wednesday (5:00 p.m.) when it hosts Coast Guard in a dual match.
