GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team has been named the Pilgrim Wrestling League Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 20.
Earning his first weekly accolade, Del Gallo is the second USM grappler to earn weekly recognition from the Pilgrim Wrestling League in as many weeks joining his older brother Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) was named the league's Wrestler of the Week in the inaugural 2016-2017 report.
Wrestling at 125 pounds, Del Gallo won his weight class at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College this past weekend, earning his second invitational championship in the last two weeks. Del Gallo posted a 4-0 record at the invitational tournament, including two wins by fall. In the semifinals, Del Gallo pinned returning regional place winner Joey Aumann of Plymouth State in 1:13 to advance to the championship bout. The Huskies' freshman then followed with a solid 10-3 decision over two-time returning regional place winner Matt Morris of Williams College.
Off to an outstanding start to his collegiate career, Del Gallo is undefeated at 12-0 early in the season. He has three wins by fall, two wins by technical fall and four wins by major decision. Del Gallo's early season success is drawing him national attention. Del Gallo sits just outside of d3wrestle.com's top 10 individual ranking, and is listed as a contender at 125-pounds.
Southern Maine hosts Trinity (Conn.) in a dual meet on Friday, December 2 (6:00 p.m.) in its next contest.
