Del Gallo Brothers Earn Major NEWA Post Season Honors

 GORHAM, Maine  – Adding another award to his mantle over his four-year standout career as a member of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling, senior Dan Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine), the 2017 NCAA Division III National Champion at 149 pounds, has been named the 2017 New England Wrestling Association Wrestler of the Year to highlight numerous awards garnered by the Huskies' wrestling team at the conclusion of their season. Freshman standout Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) also took a top honor from NEWA earning 2017 Co-Rookie Wrestler of the Year honors, while senior CJ Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) is being recognized as the 2017 NEWA Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Luth, Del Gallo and sophomore Brendan Weir (Easthampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) each earned spots on the Academic All-NEWA team as well, while Luth and Del Gallo repeated at 2017 NEWA Scholar All-Americans.

            In addition to the three major honors, Dan Del Gallo earned a spot on the All-NEWA first team, while Peter is a second team selection, and is one three Husky rookies to earn a spot on the NEWA All-Rookie team.  Luth earned honorable mention honors.  Joining Peter on the all-rookie squad are freshman standouts Josh Smith (York, Maine) and Justin Stacy (Dover, N.H./Marshwood). 

            One of three USM wrestling captains, Weir is a 2016 Pilgrim League honorable mention selection, and is earning All-Academic team honors for the second time.  Wrestling at 141 pounds, Weir is pursuing his degree in Athletic Training at Southern Maine.  Compiling a 28-7 record as a freshman, Weir went 20-14 this season and has a career record of 48-21.

            Wrestling at 165 pounds, Smith posted a 24-11 record in his rookie season.  Smith won a pair of matches at the 2017 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship, advancing to the fourth round of the consolation bracket.  Smith's outstanding freshman campaign, also earned him a spot on the 2017 NEWA honorable mention team. 

Competing at 174 pounds, Stacy joined his classmate on the all-rookie team.  Named the NEWA Rookie Wrestler of the Week once during the season, Stacy was a second semester addition to the Huskies' roster and posted a 6-3 record, including a 3-0 performance at the 2017 NEWA Duals, helping USM to a fifth place finish.  Included in his 3-0 mark at the NEWA Duals was a win over the fourth ranked wrestler in the region. 

Luth, a two-time All-NEWA wrestler, earning honorable mention honors this season is being named the 2017 NEWA Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  A four-time NWCA Scholar All-American (2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014), Luth carries an outstanding 3.947 grade point average while pursuing his degree in Exercise Science.  A three-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete and a two-time selection to the NEWA All-Academic team, Luth is a two-time captain for the Huskies. 

Only the third USM wrestler to surpass 100 win in his career, Luth completed his final season as a Husky with a tremendous 36-9 record, earning All-Region honors for the second time in his career with a fifth place finish at the 2017 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship.   Over his four seasons, Luth compiled an remarkable record of 118-34.

Completing a sensation rookie season for the Huskies, Peter Del Gallo finished the 2016-2017 season with a dominant record of 34-3 and narrowly missing out on a berth to the NCAA Division III National Championship, placing fourth at the 2017 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional in the 125-pound division to earn All-Region honors.  Del Gallo is sharing NEWA Rookie of the Year honors with WPI's Tyler Marsh.   Over the course of the season, Del Gallo claimed first place finishes at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational, the Ted Reese Invitational, and the Jim Aguiar Invitational. During the season, Del Gallo earned Pilgrim Wrestling League Rookie of the Week honors once after claiming the 125-pound title at the Jim Aguiar Invitational, posting a 4-0 record including a pair of wins over returning All-Region wrestlers. Del Gallo's success on the mat as a freshman earned him a spot on the All-NEWA second team roster and recognition on the NEWA All-Rookie team. 

Concluding his career as the 2017 National Champion, Dan Del Gallo ends his four seasons with Southern Maine wrestling as its most highly decorated student-athlete and all-time leader in wins with a record of 137-19, after completing his senior season with a near-perfect record of 45-1. A three-tim NCAA National qualifier, and three-time NCAA Northeast All-Region place winner, Del Gallo's achievements on the mat are equal in the classroom as a four-time NWCA Scholar All-American and a two-time recipient of the NCAA's Elite 90 Academic Award – an award presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average at his or her national championship event.  A 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American (second team) and first team Academic All-District student-athlete, Del Gallo holds a 3.947 grade point average while pursuing a dual major in Philosophy and Sociology. 

Just the fourth Husky wrestler to compete at the national championship more than one time in their career, joining USM greats Adam Farrington (1999, 2001), Mike Morin (2008, 2009, 2010), and Jonathan Deupree (2014, 2015), Del Gallo became the second Husky wrestler to earn All-American honors, joining USM's head coach Mike Morin (2009, 2010) and Matt Ulrich (2010) on the coveted list.
