Gauthier, Salem State Down Southern Maine, 2-1
SALEM, Mass. -- Senior forward Jackie Gauthier (Danvers, Mass.) scored a pair of goals as the Salem State University Vikings defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 2-1, in a non-conference women's college soccer match Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
The win lifts the Vikings above the .500 level at 4-3-1 overall. The Huskies dropped their second straight match to slide to 2-5-0.
Gauthier gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute converting an assist from sophomore Casey Connolly (Nahant, Mass./Swampscott) into her first goal of the season. The Vikings held the edge in play in the opening half out shooting the Huskies 9-1.
With less than 20 minutes to play in regulation time, Gauthier doubled the Vikings' lead knocking in a pass from junior Lauren Kilduff (Walpole, Mass).
The Huskies cut the deficit in half with eight minutes remaining when junior forward Katie Grenier (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) booted home her first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Nicole Taylor (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle). The Huskies had an opportunity in the final minute to tie the match, but Grenier's bid was turned aside.
USM senior goalkeeper Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine/Leavitt Area) had a busy night making 11 saves. Salem State senior keeper Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded two saves, including the game-saving stop on Grenier in the final minute. Salem State enjoyed an 18-3 advantage in shots during the match, and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
