Hannah Wiley Named LEC Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference office announced this afternoon that University of Southern Maine freshman Hannah Wiley (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) has been named the LEC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Rookie of the Week for her stellar performance at the 2012 championships meet held this past weekend at Westfield State University.
Wiley had an incredible day at the LEC and New England Alliance meet setting four school records. In LEC scoring, Wiley won four individual events and placed second in a fifth to score 48 points. On the Alliance side, Wiley won three events, was second in another and fourth in her fifth event to account for 43 points. This is the third time this season that Wiley has received Rookie of the Week honors.
In LEC scoring on the track, Wiley won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.17 seconds in the finals, breaking the school record time of 15.20 set by Hattie Landry in May 2008. In the 100-meter dash, she finished second tripping the timer in 12.51 seconds to shave 0.09 seconds off her previous record set three weeks earlier. In the 400-meter hurdles, Wiley led a one-two finish by the Huskies crossing the line in 1:02.66. Her time eclipsed her two-week old record of 1:03.11 set at Colby College.
In the field events, Wiley won the triple jump with a school record mark of 11.40 meters (37-5) to surpass her previous record of 11.33 meters (37-2 ¼) set two weeks ago. She also paced a one-two USM finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.40 meters (17-8 ¾).
The Huskies captured the LEC crown for the 13th consecutive year easily outdistancing runner-up, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 214-124. The Huskies won their third straight Alliance crown, and 12th in the last 13 years, with 170 points. Worcester State University took second with 150.50 points, followed by host Westfield State with 106 and Keene State College with 81.
Southern Maine will send qualified athletes to the New England Division III Championships this Friday and Saturday. The meet will be held at M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass.
