Southern Maine Fourth at State Championship

            BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Paced by sophomore Molly Carl (York, Maine), the University of Southern Maine women's cross country team finished fourth among nine teams competing at the State of Maine Championships held at Bowdoin College on Saturday.

            Carl finished 12th among the 134 runners, covering the 3.1-mile (5,000 meters) course in 19 minutes, 51.22 seconds to be the first Husky runner across the line.  Senior Tiffany Binette (Biddeford, Maine) was the next USM finisher coming across the line in 24th place overall (22nd in team scoring) with a time of 20:35.83.

            Completing the Huskies' five scoring finishers (12-22-29-31-32) were freshman Morgan Beede (Augusta, Maine/Cony) in 45th place overall with a time of 21:13.30, sophomore Brooke Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer) in 49th place with a time of 21:20.87, and sophomore Katherine McWilliams (Nashville, Tenn.) in 51st place with her time of 21:23.33.

            Colby College, led by the one-two finish of sophomores Amy Tortorello and Berol Dewdeny, took the team title scoring 23 points.  Bowdoin was second with 36 points, followed by Bates College with 79.  The Huskies five runners combined for 126 points.

            The Huskies will take next weekend off in preparation for the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships on October 30 in Worcester, Mass.
