GORHAM, Maine -- The United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USFTCCCA) announced Friday that University of Southern Maine junior Molly Carl (York, Maine) is among the athletes to earn 2011 Division III All-Academic Cross Country status.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country team, the athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships. A total of 183 athletes representing 96 institutions make up this year's USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Cross Country women's team.
Carl, a geography-anthropology major with a 3.768 cumulative GPA, earned her spot on the elite squad by finishing 11th at the NCAA New England Regional Championship held at Bowdoin College in November. Carl, who also received All-New England honors for finishing in the top 35, covered the 6,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 42.15 seconds.
In addition to her spot of the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, Carl's finish at the Regional Championship earned her a trip to the NCAA National Championship where she became the second USM female runner to receive All-American honors by placing 27th.
