USM Athletics To Host Town of Gorham Night on February 6

GORHAM, Maine  – In celebration of the longstanding partnership between the University of Southern Maine, the Gorham Recreation Department and the Town of Gorham, the University of Southern Maine and the Huskies' Athletic Department will be hosting its annual "Gorham Night" on Wednesday, February 6.  Gorham Night is one of many events that USM Athletics sponsors to celebrate the connections between the University of Southern Maine and the Town of Gorham.

The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting Little East Conference opponent Eastern Connecticut State University.  As part of the Gorham Night celebration, the women's game, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., will feature a halftime performance by the third and fourth grade girls' Gorham Recreation Department's basketball program.  The men's game, which will follow at 7:45 p.m., will be preceded with showcase featuring the third and fourth grade boys' teams in the Gorham Recreation program at approximately 7:10 p.m.

The Fan Experience Committee, which is collaboration with Student Life and Huskies' Athletics, will also be serving up free popcorn and cotton candy and other Husky treats throughout the games. The first 100 Huskies' fans in attendance can also snag free gifts ranging from Husky Pride t-shirts, seat cushions and foam fingers.

"The collaboration between the Town of Gorham and the University of Southern Maine continues to be vital to the success of our program," said USM Athletic Director Al Bean.  "We have numerous agreements, programs and outreach activities that benefit the town, the University and our student-athletes and we are committed to continuing to build and strengthen this relationship.  Our student-athletes and staff appreciate the support they receive from the many Gorham residents who regularly attend our athletic contests and look forward to giving back to the town through our many community-based programs."

University of Southern Maine student-athletes, as a part of the Huskies' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), annually invites members of the Gorham community to its Community Halloween Party.  Most recently, members of the USM SAAC traveled to local elementary schools and retirement communities during the holiday season to visit and sing carols, and have hosted several Gorham residents as part of SAAC's Special Olympics Integrated Sports Program during the fall semester. In the spring, during the NCAA's Division III Week, many Husky student-athletes visit local elementary schools to discuss their path to collegiate athletics.  In January, USM's SAAC was honored nationally for its contributions to community service from the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators.

"Our student-athletes, SAAC, and the athletic department truly appreciate the support it receives from the local community," noted USM SAAC Advisor and Head Women's Basketball Coach Samantha Allen. "Along with the tremendous support our Gorham fans show us on the sidelines of all of our games, members of the community and local businesses frequently pitch in to help with many of our student-led initiatives.  In fact, the generous donations from our local business and our collaboration with the Gorham Recreation Department is vital to our Annual Community Husky Halloween Party."

A casual reception for University, Gorham and Community leaders will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. during the contests in the Alumni Reception Room that adjoins Hill Gymnasium and USM Ice Arena.  Light refreshments will be made available, and USM Music majors will provide entertainment.  University of Southern Maine President Glenn Cummings; Gorham Town Council members; USM women's basketball coach and SAAC facilitator Samantha Allen, and student-athlete Ron Helderman, Biochemistry major and nationally-ranked pole vaulter will be on hand to make remarks.
