    On April 29, USM Athletics honored its 68 departing senior student-athletes at its 20th Annual Honors Night Banquet. Huskies' Athletics also presented it annual leadership awards.
  • 2018 William B. Wise Scholar Athlete Banquet

    The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics honored a record 212 of its student-athletes with its William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete honor. To earn the award, a student-athlete must be a full-time student, a member of one of USM's 22 intercollegiate teams and earn at least a 3.0 GPA. With 212 of its 501 student-athletes (43 percent) achieving the academic distinction in 2017-2018, USM Athletics has a department GPA of 3.08. The women's basketball team and the women's tennis team each earned the Remo Riciputi Award for the team with the highest GPA.
  • 2018 USM Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Community Husky Halloween Party

    Each year USM's 22 intercollegiate teams put on the annual Community Husky Halloween. This fun, family friendly event is free and open to children in grades 5 and under. The collaborative effort of all 501 USM student-athletes was led by SAAC Advisor and women's basketball coach Samantha Allen.

    On September 29, USM Athletics hosted its 33rd annual Husky Hall of Fame, and welcomed eight new members into the distinguished hall. Each of the 2018 inductees are selected on the basis of superior athletic and academic achievements, and on a commitment to their communities after graduation. Inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 2018: John McCartney, Class of 1989 (Baseball); Kelly Wilson Slaven, Class of 1999 (Soccer); Sasha Ilkovich Gerardi, Class of 2003 (Field Hockey); Curtis Wheeler, Class of 2008 (Cross Country, Track & Field); Tip Fairchild, Class of 2009 (Baseball); Shannon Elizabeth Shuttle, Class of 2010 (Volleyball); James Spaulding, Class of 2011 (Track & Field); Jessica Knight Tremblay, Class of 2012 (Lacrosse & Ice Hockey).

    An annual Athletic Department fundraiser, The Husky Golf Classic, was hosted at the beautiful and challenging Falmouth Country Club in 2018. Proceeds from this event help sponsor USM's 22 varsity teams and special athletic department functions, and provides a great opportunity for friends, family and alumni to come together and support the athletic department while enjoying a fun-filled day of golf, food, prizes and camaraderie.
  • 2017 William B. Wise Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet

    One hundred seventy-seven Southern Maine student-athletes were recognized as William B. Wise Scholar Athletes by the University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics on Sunday, November 5 at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine. With a record number of student-athletes recognized for achieving at minimum a 3.0 GPA or higher, 11 student-athletes earned the honor for the fourth time in their careers. Women's tennis, and women's basketball were honored with the Remo Reciputi Award. Women's basketball had the highest overall GPA with a 3.51. Student-speakers included Tayla Smedberg (field hockey) and Cam Scott (men's basketball).
  • 2017 SAAC Community Husky Halloween Party

    Hosted by the USM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee inside the Costello Sports Complex, the Community Husky Halloween Party is free, for children in grades 5 and under, and open to Gorham and surrounding communities. The event is coordinated and hosted by all 22 of USM's Intercollegiate teams, USM SAAC and its advisor women's basketball coach Samantha Allen
  • 2017 Husky Hall of Fame

    The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics added seven new members to the Husky Hall of Fame during its 32nd Annual Husky Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Saturday, September 30, at the Brooks Student Center on the Gorham campus. Enshrined as part of the Class of 2017 are Sinisa Bajic '10 (soccer); Stacey Kent '09 (basketball); Christen Lachapelle '08 (softball); Jon Lounsbury '12 (hockey); India Lowe '09 (field hockey); Bill O'Brien '98 (baseball); and Ed Pike '14 (hockey). Additionally, Angel Elderkin '99 (basketball) was presented with the 2017 Richard A. Costello Special Achievement Award, and Janet Judge was given the 2017 Clifford O.T. Weiden Award.

  • 2017 Senior Honors Night Banquet

    On April 30, USM Athletics hosted its 18th Annual Senior Honors Night Banquet at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine. Seventy Husky seniors were thanked for their commitment and dedication to academics and their intercollegiate athletic teams. During the evening several major Athletic Department awards were bestowed on individuals. Seniors Mary Caron (softball) and Lauren Lessard (lacrosse) were presented with the Paula D. Hodgdon Leadership Award, while senior Dan Del Gallo (wrestling) was given the Roland Wirths Memorial Award. Longtime USM Athletics support staff personnel Roger Plante was thanked for his decades of work with the David F. Drew Service Award. USM President Glenn Cummings, and Vice President Nancy Griffin were on hand to welcome student-athletes and their families.

    The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics added seven new members to the Husky Hall of Fame during its 31st Annual Husky Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Saturday, September 24, at the Brooks Student Center on the Gorham campus. Enshrined as part of the Class of 2016 are former baseball All American, Cory Adams, Class of 1999; two-time All-Little East Conference basketball player Joshua Daniels, Class of 2008; three-sport student-athlete and track and field star, Miranda Derenberger, Class of 2003; former golf champion James "JJ" Frost, Class of 2006; two-time wrestling All-American Mike Morin, Class of 2010; three-time All-LEC and two-time All-Region softball pitcher Katie Mainville-Nicholls, Class of 2011; and four-time women's ice hockey captain Breanne Fortiguerra Sanderson, Class of 2003. The seven new inductees bring the total number of former Southern Maine standouts in the Husky Hall of Fame to 204.

    The 17th Annual USM Athletics Senior Honors Night recognized 74 Husky student-athletes as well as the achievements of some of USM's top student-athletes. Three special student-athlete awards were presented: Paula Hodgdon Leadership Award; Roland Wirths' Memorial Award, and the USM Outstanding Student-Athlete Award.
  • Husky Full Potential: Chris Herren of The Herren Project

    The subject of the Emmy-nominated ESPN documentary, Unguarded, Herren struggled with substance abuse for much of his basketball career. Herren celebrated his one-year of sobriety in 2009, launching a basketball player development company, Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren, Inc. Since its launch, Herren has trained hundreds of basketball players, including many of the top basketball prospects in New England. Away from the basketball court, Herren has used his experience with substance-abuse and recovery to found The Herren Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing treatment navigation and mentoring programs to those touched by addiction, and to educating people of all ages on the dangers of substance abuse.     The Husky Hall of Fame was established in the fall of 1985 with its first group being inducted in 1986. The Husky Hall of Fame was established to recognize outstanding athletic achievements by graduates of the University of Southern Maine and its predecessor institutions, including the Western Maine Normal School, Gorham State Teachers College, the University of Maine at Portland and the University of Maine at Portland, Gorham. The first seven men and two women inducted were selected from nearly 50 nominees. The seven former student-athletes and coach, whose careers spanned more than three decades, were chosen on the basis of outstanding athletic and academic achievements and on commitment to their community after graduation. This tradition has been continued since 1986 and the 2015 Hall of Fame class marks the hall’s 30th induction ceremony.   • 2013 Little East Conference Fall All-Academic Team
    Twenty USM student-athletes competing in fall sports were named to the All-LEC Academic Team. To earn a spot on the squad, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher through the 2013 spring semester, be at least a sophomore academically and athletically and must be a full-time member of a varsity sport. The LEC recognized student-athletes that compete in all seven of their fall championship sports: men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, women's tennis and volleyball.

    The 26th annual William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Ceremony and Awards Dinner was held on November 10, 2013. The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics, in the spirit of fully supporting the NCAA Division III philosophy that places the highest priority on the overall quality of the student-athlete’s educational experience, will honor 120 scholar-athlete for their academic achievements during the 2010-2011 academic year. The William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete awards program was established in 1988 to honor the outstanding academic achievement of students participating in intercollegiate athletics. To be recognized as a scholar-athlete, an individual must be a full-time student during both semesters of the academic year, maintain a 3.0 grade point average and be a member of at least one varsity athletic team.

    For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Southern Maine women's basketball team took part in the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk in Portland, Maine. The event took place on October 16, 2011 - the day after the first official practice for the 2011-2012 season.

    As part of the 25th Anniversary of the Husky Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony six former University of Southern Maine student-athletes and one coach were inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame Banquet and Ceremony on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Kenneth Brooks Student Center on the Gorham Campus. The seven new members to the Husky Hall of Fame brings the total admission into the hall to 163 former student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have left indelible marks in the growth and success of USM athletics. The silver anniversary inductees span five decades of athletic and academic achievement and a variety of sports. Inductees include former baseball standout Richard “Dick” Jordan, Class of 1952; former women’s basketball standout Bonnie Titcomb Lewis, Class of 1971; All-New England and All-State men’s soccer player Rupert Lewis, Class of 1982; former men’s basketball coach Bob Brown; an Maine Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and three time Little East Conference first team All-Star Tracy Libby Lizotte, Class of 1999; an All-American member of the 1997 National Championship baseball team Michael McCullum, Class of 1999 and two-sport standout and seven-time regional All-American Renée Heath-Towne, Class of 2004.

Giles, Class of 1980; former Little East Conference Player of the Year in women’s soccer, Debbie Jandreau Gendron, Class of 1999; a Maine Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and three-time Little East Conference first team all-star, Tracy Libby Lizzotte, Class of 1999; a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association All-Region and two-time CoSIDA District One Academic softball All-American selection June Lavallee Ponitz, Class of 2000; and a first team All-Little East Conference selection in softball and field hockey, Becky Manson-Rioux, Class of 2003.

    Held at The Landing at Pine Point in Scarborough, Maine, Stars By the Sea was an evening of cocktails and dancing to help benefit the USM Turf Field project. In 2011, Stars By the Sea helped celebrate the 1991 and 1997 USM Baseball National Championship teams.
