Phil Cole- Men’s Tennis Coach (1965-2008). The men’s tennis coach for more than four decades at University of Maine Portland and USM. A retired professor of history at USM, Phil Cole started his coaching career at University of Maine Portland in 1965. He had a number of strong teams at UMP, including his 1967 team that won 13 straight matches. Following the merger of UM Portland and Gorham State College, Cole’s early USM teams won four NAIA District Titles over a 14-season span (1972-1985) and advanced to the NAIA national tournament in 1972 and 1980. Cole guided the Huskies to four Little East Conference crowns in a five year span (2003-07) and their first NCAA tournament berth in 2007, before retiring from coaching in 2008. He coached 21 LEC singles flight champions and eight doubles titlists between 1990-2008. During his more than four-decade-long career, Cole guided his team to a combined 120-173 record (not including NAIA tournament play).
