GARY FIFIELD, 1987-2015, Women’s Basketball Coach/Administrator

During his 27 seasons at the helm of the Huskies’ women’s basketball program, Gary Fifield established Southern Maine as one of the NCAA Division III premiere programs.  Under Fifield’s leadership, the Huskies claimed 21 Little East Conference Championships and appeared in 26 NCAA Division III National Championship tournaments, including 16 Sweet Sixteens, 10 Elite Eights, five Final Fours and three National Finals.  Named the 2005 Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association (WBCA) Division III National Coach of the Year, Fifield was selected as the Little East Conference Coach of the Year 14 times and earned WBCA District 1 Coach of the Year honors on four occasions.  Fifield retired from coaching at the conclusion of the 2014-2015 season with a career record of 660 wins and 137 losses for an .828 winning percentage.  During his career, Fifield had 10 players receive All-American or honorable mention All-American honors on 14 occasions and nine of his former players were named to the Little East Conference 25th Anniversary team.  Having previously been inducted into the LEC Hall of Fame, New England Basketball Hall of Fame and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame, Fifield’s reach has extended beyond the titles and player accolades as many of his former student-athletes are now coaching at the high school and intercollegiate level.
