Harold P. “Chappy” Menninger- Former USM goalkeeper Steve deBree remembers coach Menninger for his tireless promotion of the sport of soccer and his vast knowledge of the game. “He took soccer to another level at USM,” says deBree, who competeted in the NAIA National Tournament under Menninger. “In soccer knowledge and expertise he was at a higher level than the other coaches we faced. That was one of the biggest reasons why we did so well.” During his 10-year coaching stay at USM Menninger took the team to nationals three times, in 1976, 1979-80. He had the benefit of working with some of USM’s all-time greatest players, but according to deBree much of the credit for the success should go to the coach. “He was a great teacher of the game and passed on much of his tactical knowledge,” says deBree. “He did so much for the quality of the USM program.” Menninger, a graduate, of the University of New Mexico, compiled a 79-21-9 record with the Huskies. He was most recently the Director of Athletics and Recreation at Fairfield University.
