James V. Sullivan, a USM professor emeritus of health, physical education and recreation, retired as a faculty member and administrator in 1991, after 32 years of service. The author of numerous books and articles, Sullivan played a central role in the development of several USM programs, among them the associate baccalaureate programs in therapeutic recreation and Lifeline, one of the largest community health and fitness programs in Maine. In 1993, the Portland campus gym, was dedicated as the James V. Sullivan Gymnasium. Earlier this year, Sullivan was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife Ruth are residents of South Portland.
