Ricker HR Gives USM 8-5 Win Over Colby in 10 Innings
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior David Ricker (Winslow, Maine) slammed a two-out, three-run home run in the 10th inning to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies an 8-5, non-conference baseball victory over the Colby College Mules Wednesday afternoon at Coombs Field.
The win lifts the Huskies' overall record to 12-11. The Mules dropped their second straight game to fall to 9-11.
Junior Mark Nelson (Walpole, Mass.) retired the first two USM batters in the 10th before sophomore Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) singled, and sophomore Matt Powers (Portland, Maine/Deering) reached on a fielder's choice to set the table for Ricker. The home run was Ricker's second round tripper of the season.
Senior Roberto Valenti (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) came on to preserve the victory for sophomore Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine). Valenti gave up a single and struck out two in the 10th to earn his first save. Chadwick pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief to earn his first victory.
USM tied the game in the eighth inning when Verrier, pinch-hitting for senior Lucas Marks (Orland, Maine/George Stevens Academy), hit a single to drive in junior Brett Barrett (Keene, N.H.). Barrett led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch before scoring on Verrier's hit.
Barrett led the Huskies' 10-hit attack with three hits. Ricker had a double in addition to his home run. Verrier and junior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) each had two hits.
Seniors Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, Conn./Taft School), Devlin McConnell (Merion Station, Penn./Lower Merion) and Brandon Nieuw (Port Chester, N.Y./Rye Country Day) and rookie Luke Duncklee (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and each had two hits for the Mules. Freshman Jason Buco (Methuen, Mass./Philips Andover) hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Nelson, the third Colby pitcher, was tagged with the loss.
Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) hosting Western Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference doubleheader. Colby begins a three-game weekend series on Friday (3:00 p.m.) at Tufts University.
