GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine) went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI to spark the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 7-4 victory over the visiting Babson College Beavers in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.
The win snapped the Huskies' two-game losing streak, and pushed them back over the .500 mark at 17-16 overall. The Beavers dropped their fourth straight game to slip to 20-15.
Grady had a key two-run double, and later scored a run, during the Huskies' four-run first inning. He would hit his sixth triple of the season in the third inning, and had a leadoff single and scored an insurance run in the seventh inning.
Senior David Ricker (Winthrop, Maine) and rookie Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) were the only other USM hitters with multiple hits. Junior pitcher Ryan Yates (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills), the first of five Huskies hurlers, picked up his second win of the season against three losses. Junior Nick Douglass (Poland, Maine) earned his fifth save of the campaign getting the final two outs.
Senior Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, Mass./BC High) led the Beavers' 13-hit attack with four singles. Junior Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J./The Peddie School) and senior Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass./Salisbury, School) each had a pair of safeties. Junior starting pitcher Brian Swanton (Foxboro, Mass.) was tagged with his third loss against two wins.
The Huskies got the jump on the Beavers scoring four times in their first turn at bat. Grady brought in the first two runs with his double. Junior Brett Barrett (Keene, N.H.) knocked in the third run with a sacrifice fly. Grady would come across the plate with the fourth run on a wild pitch.
Southern Maine added a single run in the fourth when sophomore Matt Powers (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored a double-play ball.
The Beavers chipped away at the deficit getting a single run in the fifth on senior Travis Jonasson's (Needham, Mass./Catholic Memorial) RBI single, and two more in the sixth inning on a two-run double by rookie Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep) that chased Yates from the game.
Miller scored on a Cleary single in the seventh to pull the Beavers within one at 5-4. In the home half, Grady would score his second run of the day on sophomore Matt Verrier's (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) sacrifice fly. The Huskies scored another run in the inning on a fielder's choice.
The Beavers threatened in the ninth against sophomore southpaw Luke Hammond (Rangeley, Maine/Deering) putting two runners aboard with one out. Douglass came on to get a strikeout and a soft line drive to end the game.
Southern Maine is off until Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it travels to Keene State College for a Little East Conference doubleheader. Babson will play tomorrow (3:30 p.m.) at home against Rhode Island College in its final tune-up before the NEWMAC tournament that starts Saturday.
