BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine baseball team pounded out 19 hits en route to a 13-9 non-conference victory over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears Thursday afternoon at Pickard Field.

The win was the fifth straight victory for the Huskies, and improved their record to 21-16 overall.  The Polar Bears had their three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 21-15.

Sophomore John Carey (South Portland, Maine) led the Huskies assault on three Polar Bear pitchers going 4 for 5, including a double.  Classmate Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs.  Every starter in the Huskies lineup had at least one hit in the game.

Sophomore John Lefeber (Branford, Conn./Hamden Hall) and senior Jordan Edgett (Lynn, Mass./St. John's Prep) paced the Polar Bears' 17-hit attack with three hits apiece.  Four other Bowdoin players had two hits.

USM sophomore pitcher Nathan Veilleux (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) picked up his first win of the season going three innings in relief.  Veilleux allowed five hits, no earned runs and walked one while striking out one.  Bowdoin junior starter Oliver Van Zant (Westport, Conn./Greene Farms Academy) hurled the first six innings and was saddled with the loss despite allowing only four earned runs.

Tied 3-3 heading into the fifth inning, both sides put together a five-run inning to make it 8-8.  The Huskies scored five runs, all with two outs, taking advantage of four hits, a walk and two Polar Bear errors.  Junior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine) had a key two run single, and Carey had an RBI double, in the inning.

Bowdoin responded with five runs getting RBI hits from rookie Erik Jacobsen (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy), sophomore Kyle LeBlanc (Newburyport, Mass.) and Edgett, and a sacrifice fly by Lefeber.  The fifth run scored on an error.

Southern Maine took the lead for good in the sixth on junior Tucker White's (Deerfield, N.H./Coe Brown Northwood) RBI single.  A second run scored on a throwing error.  Bowdoin got one run back in its half of the inning on an RBI single by Lefeber.

The Huskies added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI hit by sophomore Matt Powers (Portland, Maine/Deering) and another Bowdoin error.  Sophomore Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Chadwick in the ninth inning giving the Huskies a four-run lead.

Southern Maine has rescheduled tomorrow's Little East Conference doubleheader with Eastern Connecticut State University to Saturday with the first game starting at noon.  Bowdoin will travel to Middlebury College for a doubleheader on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
