GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference today announced that University of Southern Maine sophomore infielder John Carey (South Portland, Maine) has been selected as the Player of the Week for the week of April 30 through May 6.
Carey, the 2010 LEC Rookie of the Year, helped the Huskies post a 4-0 record last week, including a doubleheader sweep of LEC rival and 21st ranked Eastern Connecticut State University. The sweep gave the Huskies their first LEC regular season title since 2009 and the right to host the upcoming championship tournament. The six-team, double-elimination championship tournament gets underway Wednesday (9:30 a.m.) with three games at the USM Baseball Stadium.
In four games last week, Carey batted .533 (8 for 15), including a 4 for 8 effort against Eastern Connecticut, with a double, five RBI and three stolen bases. Carey was also flawless in the field handling 24 chances. Earlier in the week, Carey had a four-hit day in the Huskies' win at Bowdoin College.
Against Eastern Connecticut, Carey had a key RBI single in the Huskies' three-run first-inning uprising in the opening game, and had a pair of RBI singles and a steal of home on a double steal in the nightcap. His steal of home in the fourth inning put the Huskies in the lead for good.
Heading into Wednesday's opening round of the LEC tournament, Carey is batting .317 (46 for 145) on the season with eight doubles, one triple, one home run and 28 RBI.
Southern Maine, 23-16 overall and 11-3 in the Little East, will take on sixth-seeded Plymouth State University (17-20; 5-9) in the first game of the LEC tournament.
