YAPHANK, N.Y. – Junior Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) hit two home runs and pitched five shutout innings as the University of Southern Maine Huskies opened their 2013 season with a 14-1 victory over the Mount Saint Mary College Knights on Saturday.
Bernard hit a two-run homer during the Huskies' five-run first-inning explosion and a second two-run round tripper in the fourth inning. On the hill, the right-hander surrendered only two singles and one walk while striking out four to pick up the win.
The Huskies scored five times in the first inning on junior Forrest Chadwick's (Gardiner, Maine) two-run double, an RBI groundout from senior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) and Bernard's first homer.
USM added five more runs in the second frame to open up a 10-0 lead. Grady plated the first two runs with a double, and junior Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) cleared the bases with a triple.
Bernard accounted for the Huskies' two runs in the fourth, and Verrier had a RBI double in the sixth inning. Sophomore Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) plated the final USM run in the sixth with an RBI groundout.
Senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) led the Huskies' 13-hit attack with three singles and two runs scored. Bernard and Verrier each had two extra-base hits and four RBI.
The Knights picked up their lone run in the sixth inning against USM sophomore right-hander Alex Tobey (South Berwick, Maine/Berwick Academy). Junior Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) hit a one-out double and came home on a single off the bat of senior Alec Seidman (Poughquag, N.Y.).
Sophomore Matt Schumacher (Commack, N.Y.), the first of four hurlers used by the Knights, was tagged with the loss.
The game was the season opener for the Huskies while the Knights dropped their second straight game to fall to 0-2.
Southern Maine will play SUNY College at Old Westbury at Baseball Heaven on Sunday (10:30 a.m.). Mount Saint Mary will play a second game today against Ithaca College.
