YAPHANK, N.Y. – Junior Logan Carman (Newfields, N.H.) and sophomore Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) combined to pitch a five-hit shutout as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers 6-0 in a non-conference game Sunday at Baseball Heaven.
The Huskies improve to 2-0 on the season after sweeping Mount Saint Mary College and Old Westbury this weekend. The Panthers slip to 3-3.
Carman went the first six innings giving up three hits and one walk while striking out four to earn the victory. Carman did not allow a runner past second base, and helped his own cause picking off two Old Westbury runners. Richards came on to complete the shutout with three scoreless innings allowing two hits. He faced a one-out, first-and-third situation in his first inning of work, but escaped harm with a strikeout and comebacker to the mound.
Junior Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) led the Huskies' offense with a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season, three runs scored and two RBI. Senior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy), junior Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) and sophomore Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) each had two hits.
Junior right-hander Arismendy Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./Morris) went six innings on the mound for the Panthers surrendering seven hits while striking out six. Two of the four runs against Nunez were unearned.
The Huskies grabbed a 2-0 lead against Nunez in the first inning. With two outs, senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and took third on an error. Chadwick singled to drive in White, stole second, and scored on an infield error on Grady's ground ball.
Carman and Nunez matched zeroes over the next three innings before the Huskies added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Verrier doubled, took third on a Glauser single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee). In the sixth, Chadwick hit a solo home run to right center.
The Huskies added insurance runs in the eighth when junior Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) doubled, stole third and scored on an error, and in the ninth inning when Chadwick scored on Bernard's sacrifice fly.
Southern Maine is off until March 16-17 when it travels to Farmingdale, N.Y., to play a two-game series Farmingdale State. Old Westbury is back in action on Friday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Plattsburgh State.
