WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Senior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) continued his hot hitting as a he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI as the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team pounded out 15 hits en route to a 9-2 win over the Worcester State University Lancers at Chain of Lakes Stadium Friday morning.
With the win, the Huskies are now 2-0 on their spring trip and improve to 5-1 overall. The Lancers drop to 4-6 with the loss.
It is the second straight day Grady has driven in three runs, as he went 6-for-6 with three RBI in a 16-10 win over Trinity College (Conn.) on Thursday. Grady was one of five Southern Maine hitters with multiple hits. Junior Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, senior John Carey (South Portland, Maine) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, and sophomore Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) went 2-for-4.
Senior right hander Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) got the win on the mound, going five innings and giving one run on four hits, while only walking one. Sophomore right hander Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) came on for Bernard in the sixth and pitched three solid innings of relief, giving up an unearned run on one hit while striking out four before freshman right hander Ryan Browner (Georgetown, Mass.) came on to pitch a scoreless ninth.
Worcester State sophomore Zach George (Attleboro, Mass.) was the Lancers' lone repeat hitter as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI. Senior right-hander Cruz Rosado (Clinton, Mass.), who went three innings giving up five runs on eight hits, was tagged with loss.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first when rookie Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) lead off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Anthony Pisani (Cheshire, Conn./Notre Dame).
Worcester State got the run back to tie the game in the second, but Southern Maine regained the lead with another run in its half of the inning on an RBI single by junior Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass./New Hampton) that scored Carey.
The Huskies tacked on three more runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Grady ignited the rally with a two-run single, and the third run scored on a single off the bat of Carey. Southern Maine pushed another run across in the bottom of the fifth to lead 6-1.
Worcester State scored a run in its half of the seventh before the Huskies scored three more in its turn to add some insurance. An RBI single for Grady and a sacrifice fly from Carey highlighted Southern Maine's seventh inning.
Southern Maine returns to action with a doubleheader in Auburndale, Fla., against DePauw University on Saturday (3:00 p.m.). The game against Southern Maine concludes Worcester State's spring trip. The Lancers play at Endicott College on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
