BEVERLY, Mass. -- Freshman Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team past the Endicott College Gulls, 5-1, in a non-conference game at North Field Tuesday.
The win is the fifth straight for the Huskies — ranked third in New England and are receiving votes in the D3Baseball.com and ABCA national polls — as they improve to 11-3 overall. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Gulls as they drop to 10-6.
Dexter went deep in the sixth and seventh innings for his first two career home runs. He also singled up the middle in the third to complete his third three-hit game of the season. Senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) also went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Juniors John Carey (South Portland, Maine) and Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) each hit RBI singles. White also had two stolen bases.
Freshman right-hander Shyler Scates (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) allowed one hit in four innings of solid relief work to earn his first collegiate win. Scates is now 1-0. Junior southpaw Logan Carman (Newfields, N.H./Laurel Springs) started and pitched the first four innings giving up two hits and one walk while striking out four. Sophomore right-hander Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) pitched the ninth to finish things off for the Huskies.
Endicott junior right-hander Tyler Hill (Las Vegas, Nev./New Hampton), who went 5.2 innings giving up three runs on eight hits, was tagged with the loss. Hill is now 0-2 on the year.
Senior Brett Holmgren (Middleboro, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) led Endicott at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double. Junior EJ Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep) finished 1-for-4 with an RBI single, and senior Colin Sitarz (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) scored Endicott's lone run.
Carman and Scates combined to hold the Gulls to just three hits and no runs through the first eight innings before Endicott scored an unearned run on Martinez's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
Hill held the Huskies scoreless through five innings before Dexter homered to lead off the sixth, igniting a three-run inning. Two batters after Dexter's home run, White singled to center field, stole second and scored on a single by Carey through the left side. Carey then advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bernard to give the Huskies the 3-0 lead.
Dexter added another run when he hit a two-out solo shot in the seventh, putting Southern Maine up 4-0. After Scates sat the Gulls down in order in the seventh, White hit his second home run of the season in the eighth to give Richards a five-run cushion before finishing the ninth.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) when they travel to Brunswick, Maine, to take on Bowdoin College in a non-conference game at Pickard Baseball Diamond. The Gulls will travel to Brandeis University tomorrow (3:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
