BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Senior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies past the Bowdoin College Polar Bears, 7-2, in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Pickard Field.

The win was the sixth straight for the Huskies, and improves their overall mark to 12-3.  The Polar Bears, playing their home opener, slip back to .500 at 9-9 overall.  The two teams will meet again at USM on April 30.

Grady got the Huskies off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning stroking a two-run double to left-center field scoring sophomore Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) and senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood).  Grady would also single and score in the fifth and eighth innings.

White had a pair of safeties and scored two runs, and senior Anthony Pisani (Cheshire, Conn./Notre Dame) had two singles, for the Huskies.  Junior Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) had two RBI.

Rookie left-hander Tyler Leavitt (North Andover, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season going 5.1 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out two.  Sophomore Andrew Richards (South Portland, Maine) and freshman Ryan Browner (Georgetown, Mass.) combined for 3.2 innings of two-hit shutout relief.

Bowdoin countered Grady's two-run double with a single run in the first on an RBI groundout from junior Duncan Taylor (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) and an unearned run in the third to tie the score at 2-2.

Grady helped the Huskies regain the lead for good in the fourth as he led off with a single, advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt, took third on a single by junior Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) and scored on Verrier's RBI groundout.  Bernard later scored on junior Troy Thibodeau's (Danvers, Mass.) sacrifice fly.

The Huskies added three insurance runs in the eighth inning as Bernard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home Glauser with the first run.  Verrier followed with a sacrifice fly to score White, and Grady scored on an RBI single by senior Brett Barrett (Keene, N.H.).

Senior right-hander Drew LoRusso (Medfield, Mass./Noble & Greenough), the fourth of nine hurlers employed by the Polar Bears in the game, took the loss.  No Bowdoin hitter had more than one hit.

Southern Maine plays its home opener on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) hosting Salem State University at the USM Baseball Stadium in Gorham.  Bowdoin will be back in action on Friday (3:00 p.m.) traveling to Bates College.
