White, Bernard Power Southern Maine Past Husson 15-8
BANGOR, Maine -- Senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) and junior Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) hit home runs as the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies pounded out 17 hits en route to a 15-8 victory over the Husson University Eagles in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon at the Winkin Complex.
The victory extends the Huskies' winning streak to 12 games, and improves their overall record to 18-3. The Eagles had their five-game winning streak snapped and fall to 12-11.
The red-hot hitting White was 3-for-6 with two doubles, a home run and five RBI. Bernard also had five RBI coming on a sacrifice fly and a grand slam homer during the Huskies' eight-run seventh-inning uprising.
Junior Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) and senior Anthony Pisani (Cheshire, Conn./Notre Dame) each had three hits and scored two runs. Rookie Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and senior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) had two hits apiece. Grady's third-inning single extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
Juniors Pat Thibodeau (Caribou, Maine) and Cody McInnis (Bangor, Maine) and senior Shawn Smith (Winterport, Maine/Hampden Academy) had two hits apiece for the Eagles. Junior Tim Nason (Bucksport, Maine), who was touched for eight hits and five runs in 3.2 innings, was saddled with the loss to even his record at 2-2.
USM took a 1-0 lead in the first on White's RBI that scored White. The teams traded runs in the third inning before White hit a three-run homer, his fifth of the season, in the fourth to make it 5-1.
Husson rallied for two markers in the fifth to close the gap to 5-3. Smith drove in sophomore Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, Maine) who led off the inning with a double for the first run, and later scored on one of USM's five errors.
Chadwick doubled to open the sixth, and scored on Grady's one-out triple. Grady would come across on Bernard's sacrifice fly to center field.
The Eagles got one back in its half of the sixth as junior Ben McLain (Pemaquid, Maine/Lincoln Academy) doubled and later scored on an infield error.
USM blew the game open in the seventh scoring eight runs on seven hits. Pisani drove in the first two with a single. He would later score on an outfield throwing error. White had an RBI double, and Bernard capped off the outburst with his grand slam homer to left-center field make it 15-4.
Husson took advantage of five consecutive walks and an infield error to score four times in the eight to close the gap, but got no closer.
Southern Maine returns home on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) to face Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College in a doubleheader. Husson opens a four-game North Atlantic Conference series at home against Castleton State College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) with a doubleheader.
