Southern Maine Rolls Past Suffolk 17-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Tucker White (Deerfield, N.H./Coe-Brown Northwood) went 4-for-5, including a double and home run, with six RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine's 20-hit attack as the Huskies rolled to a 17-2 victory over the visiting Suffolk University Rams on Senior Day at the USM Baseball Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies finished the regular season with a 33-7 record and will be the top seed and host for the upcoming Little East Conference tournament that begins Wednesday (9:30 a.m.). The Rams, who have one game remaining in the regular season, are 29-12 overall. The Rams play at M.I.T. on Monday (4:00 p.m.) to conclude the season.
White had an RBI single in the first inning, a three-run double in the Huskies' eight-run second inning, a solo home run in the third and another RBI in the sixth inning before ending his day. He also stole two bases.
Junior Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) had three hits and two RBI, and four other players had two hit apiece for the Huskies. Junior Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) contributed a two-run homer to the Huskies' big second inning. Every starter in the USM lineup had at least one hit.
Freshman right-hander Shyler Scates (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy), the second of eight USM pitchers used in the game, picked up the win with two innings of shutout relief. Scates improved his record to 4-1.
Senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) and sophomore Adam Johnson (Georgetown, Mass.) each and a double and single for the Rams. Juniors Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip) and Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) had a pair of singles apiece. Muse and Johnson had the Rams RBI.
Junior left-handed starter Steve Chamberland (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) was tagged with his second loss of the season against four wins.
Southern Maine jumped out in front 2-0 in the first inning on White's RBI single and an RBI double from senior Nick Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy).
Suffolk countered with a single run in the second inning on Johnson's RBI double that scored freshman Jon Lapolla (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Academy).
The Huskies blew the game open in the home half of the inning sending 12 men to the plate and scoring eight times. White in three runs with a bases-loaded double and Chadwick followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, Bernard hit his two-run homer to left field. Junior Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills), who scored the first run, added the final run with an RBI double.
USM added a single run in the fourth on White's long home run to left-center field, and two more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from senior Anthony Pisani (Cheshire, Conn./Notre Dame) and White RBI single.
Suffolk tacked up a run in the eighth when Cunningham, who led off the frame with a double, scored on a two-out single by Muse. Southern Maine plated three runs in its half of the inning to account for the 17-2 final.
