GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced today that University of Southern Maine senior catcher Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) has been selected as the Player of the Week for the week of April 21-27. This is the first time in his USM career that Verrier has been picked as the LEC Player of the Week.
In four games last week, Verrier hit .438 (7 for 16) with four runs scored, five doubles, one home run and nine RBI. The right-handed hitting Verrier also had a .471 on-base percentage, a .938 slugging percentage and played flawless defense in the field. He hit safely in all four games to extend his hitting streak to a season high five games.
In three Little East games, Verrier helped the Huskies defeat the University of Massachusetts and sweep Keene State College. Against UMB, he contributed a double and two RBI. In the first game at Keene, Verrier had a double and two RBI while in the nightcap he went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a home run and a career-high five RBI. The four-hit game was his second of the season.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, Verrier is hitting .324 (35 for 108) with 24 runs scored, seven doubles, five homers and 29 RBI.
Southern Maine (26-8; 11-1) is on the road tomorrow (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game at Bowdoin College before closing the regular season with a home game on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) against Bates College and a Little East Conference doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday (12:00 p.m.) at the USM Baseball Stadium.
