Little East Conference Tournament - Game Two

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Senior southpaw Logan Carman (Newfields, N.H./Exeter) pitched a complete game and classmate Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) hit two home runs to lead the second-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 victory over the fifth-seeded Plymouth State University Panthers in the first day of play at the Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament.  The six-team, double-elimination tournament is being hosted at top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University.

The victory moves the #9/#12-ranked Huskies, 29-10 overall, into Game Six of the tournament tomorrow evening (6:00 p.m.) against the winner of Game Three between third-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston this evening (6:00 p.m).  The Panthers, 22-15 overall, will play sixth-seeded Rhode Island College in an elimination game Thursday morning (11:00 a.m.).

Carman (2-1) won a pitchers duel with PSU rookie right-hander Curtis Arsenault (Berlin, N.H./Phillips Exeter) allowing only four hits and one walk.  He struck out one.  The only run Carman surrendered was unearned.  Arsenault (4-2) gave up three runs on six hits and three walks.  He fanned four.

Chadwick provided much of the Huskies offense hitting a solo home run to lead off the second inning, and another solo shot with two outs in the eighth.  The senior outfielder was the only repeat hitter in the game for either team.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chadwick drove an Arsenault pitch over the right-center field fence for his second homer of the season.

Sophomore Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) doubled the Huskies' lead in the third inning with an RBI double that chased home rookie Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine).  McDonough walked with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a single by senior John Carey (South Portland, Maine).  After an intentional walk to Chadwick to load the bases, Arsenault got out of the inning with a strikeout and a comebacker to the mound.

Carman got out of a two-on, two-out situation in the first inning, and then cruised through the next six innings.  Sophomore Paul Cannon (Concord, N.H.) reached Carman for a single in the third, but was erased on an inning-ending double play.  Carman did not permit another base runner until the eighth.  Heading into the eighth inning, Carman had set down 14 straight Panther hitters.

In the eighth, Carman issued his lone walk to senior Rob Madonna (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West), and classmate Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) followed with a single through the left side.  Junior Paul Reny (South Portland, Maine) laid down a bunt that Carman threw away allowing Madonna to score.  Carman would come back to get the next three hitters to escape any further damage.

Chadwick gave Carman an insurance run in the home half of the frame with his second home run of the game off Arsenault, this time over the fence in left-center field.

Carman, who missed the first month of the season, retired the Panthers in order in the ninth to preserve his second win of the season.  The win was the 21st of Carman's career at USM.
