GORHAM, Maine -- Four members of the University of Southern Maine baseball team were among the 23 players named to the 2014 ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Division III New England Baseball All-Star Teams that were announced Wednesday following voting by the head coaches within the New England region.

Named to the All-ECAC Division III New England first team were senior catcher Matt Verrier (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills), senior first baseman John Carey (South Carey) and sophomore shortstop Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee).  Senior Chris Bernard (Scarborough, Maine) was picked for a spot on the second team as the designated hitter.

The quartet helped the Huskies compile a 37-15 overall record during the recently completed 2014 season.  The Huskies shared the Little East Conference regular season crown with an 11-3 mark and won the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship to earn their second straight, and eighth all-time, trip to the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin.

The Huskies starting catcher for the past three seasons after transferring from the University of Maine, Verrier finished the season batting .322 (56 for 174) with 12 double, a team-leading eight home runs and 44 RBI.  Verrier was also voted to the All-Little East Conference first team for the second straight year, the NEIBA (New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association) Division III All-New England second team, and the D3baseball.com All-Region second team.

The Little East Conference Rookie of the Year in 2010, Carey, a fifth-year senior, had a .328 average (62 for 189) with 10 doubles, five triples, two homers and 34 RBI during the 2014 season. Carey became the 25th player in school history to reach the 200-career hit mark with an eighth-inning double against Salem State University on April 3.  Carey previously was named to the All-LEC first team for the second consecutive season, the NEIBA Division III All-New England first team, and the D3baseball.com All-Region second team.

One the finest shortstops to ever wear a USM uniform, Dexter led the Huskies with a .382 batting average (81 for 212) with 14 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 33 RBI.  Another former LEC Rookie of the Year (2013), Dexter was an All-LEC first-team pick for the second straight year, and a second team NEIBA Division III All-New England and D3baseball.com All-Region pick.

A third team Rawlings/ABCA Division III All-American (utility player), Bernard, hit for a .320 average (64 for 200) with a team-high 20 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 48 RBI.  Bernard became a two-time All-LEC pick this season as the first team designated hitter. He was also a first-team NEIBA All-New England selection, and was named to the D3baseball.com All-Region third team.  In addition to his on-field success this spring, Bernard was recognized as a second team Capital One Academic All-America® as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
