Stauble Leads Southern Maine Past Bowdoin 15-5

Sophomore Goes 3 for 4 with Seven RBI

            BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Sophomore Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine/Bridgton Academy) went 3 for 4 and drove in seven runs to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 15-5 non-conference victory over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears Tuesday afternoon at Pickard Field.

            The win extends the Huskies' winning streak to four, and improves their overall record to 26-11.  The Polar Bears have dropped three of their four games and are now 20-13 overall.

            Stauble and junior Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) led the Huskies' 16-hit attack with three hits apiece.  Senior Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) had a double and single, scored three times and drove in two.  Freshman Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) matched his older brother with a double and a single and scored twice.

            Freshman right-hander Jack Donnelly (Walpole, Mass.) went the distance on the hill for the Huskies to earn his fourth win of the season.  Donnelly gave up five runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out seven.

            Sophomore Joe Gentile (Groton, Mass./Groton School) led the Polar Bears offense with a double, two singles and two runs scored.  Senior Peter Cimini (Needham, Mass./St. Sebastian's) drove in four runs with a home run and a single.  Rookie Jacob Stein (Scarsdale, N.Y.), the second of seven hurlers used by Bowdoin in the game, was tagged with the loss.

            After two scoreless innings, the Huskies broke lose for five runs in the third on an RBI single by Sam Dexter, a two-run single by Stauble, an RBI double by senior Jake Glauser (Goffstown, N.H.) and an RBI single by sophomore Nick Bowie (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills).

            The Polar Bears responded with four runs in their half of the frame.  The first three came in on Cimini's three-run homer to left field.  Freshman Colby Joncas (Londonderry, N.H.) had a two-out RBI single to cut the margin to 5-4.

            Stauble drove in two runs in the fourth with a bases-loaded single, and McDonough drove in Sam Dexter with a sacrifice fly to push the Huskies lead up to 8-4.

            The Huskies blew the game opener in the fifth inning scoring four times.  Sophomore Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine) knocked in the first run, and Jake Dexter followed with an RBI single.  Stauble added two more RBI to his total with a bases-loaded single.

            Stauble picked up his seventh RBI with a ground out in the top of the seventh, and Cimini matched that with a single for his fourth RBI in the home half.

            USM scored twice in the ninth on an RBI double by Sam Dexter, and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Nick Volger (Portland, Maine).

            Southern Maine is in action tomorrow afternoon (3:30 p.m.) hosting Bates College.  Bowdoin is off until Friday (3:00 p.m.) when it hosts Bates.
