Huskies Take On Salve Regina on Sunday
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Rookie Zach Carney (Appleton, Wis.) hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to snap a 10-10 tie and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles held on to defeat the #10 University of Southern Maine Huskies, 12-11, in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park #3. The game was the season opener for the Huskies.
Trailing 10-9 going into the top of the sixth, the Eagles scored three times against USM sophomore reliever Ben Lambert (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) on an RBI double from senior Nate Roethle (Slinger, Wis.) and Carney's two-run bomb to take a 12-10 lead.
Southern Maine got one back in the eighth on sophomore Andrew Olszak's (Danvers, Mass.) RBI groundout, and loaded the bases in the ninth with one out, but UWL junior closer Mason McMahon (Maple Grove, Minn.) got a strikeout and fly ball to escape and earn the save.
The Huskies outhit the Eagles 16-15. Junior Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) went 4 for 5 with a double, and rookie Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) had three hits in his collegiate debut. Juniors Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) and Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and sophomore Dylan Hapworth (Winthrop, Maine) had two hits apiece. Dexter and Olszak each had three RBI.
Sophomore Brennan Schmitt (Middleton, Wis.) had five RBI for the Eagles on a first-inning grand slam homer and an RBI single in the fourth.
