Troiano Delivers Winning Run in the 9th
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Freshman Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) delivered the winning run with a single in the top of the ninth inning to give the #10 University of Southern Maine Huskies a come-from-behind, 3-2 victory over #24 Salve Regina University in a non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park #4.
The win evened the Huskies' record at 1-1 while the Seahawks slipped back to .500 at 2-2. The teams will meet again at USM on April 22.
Tied 2-2 going into the top of the ninth, the Huskies got a leadoff single from sophomore Dylan Hapworth (Winthrop, Maine), a sacrifice bunt from junior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) and an intentional walk to junior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) to set the stage for Troiano. The rookie outfielder, converting to third base, stroked a single to center field to deliver Hapworth with the go-ahead run.
Dexter came on to pitch a scoreless bottom of the ninth to earn his first save of the season, and the 14th of his career.
Salve Regina took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out single from junior Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.), a two-base wild pitch and an RBI single through the right side by senior Alex Perry (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan).
The teams traded runs in the fourth as Quintal put the Huskies on the board with an RBI bunt single with two outs to score junior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee), and the Seahawks countered with an RBI single from senior Christian Vargas (Melbourne, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) to regain the lead.
Troiano led off the USM fifth with a double and came around to score on a single up the middle by junior Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine). The game would remain tied until the ninth.
Junior left-hander Henry Curran (South Portland, Maine) picked up the win for USM going 1.2 scoreless innings before Dexter came on to pitch the ninth. Sophomore starter Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy) went the first six innings allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Junior Will Ginsberg (Sharon, Mass.), the second of three Salve Regina hurlers used in the game, took the loss.
Troiano led the Huskies' 11-hit attack going 3 for 3 with a run scored and the game-winning RBI. Hapworth, Richard and sophomore Anthony Degifico (South Portland, Maine) each had two hits. Smith, Perry and Vargas had two hits each for the Seahawks.
