Southern Maine Knocks Out Cortland 12-10 in 10 Innings
AUBURN, N.Y. -- Junior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) drove in two runs with a triple to right-center field in the 10th inning to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a dramatic, come-from-behind 12-10 win over the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons in an elimination game of the NCAA Division III New York Regional Tournament being played at Falcon Park.
The win moves the Huskies, 30-14 on the season, into the championship round against Swarthmore College. The Huskies will need to defeat the Garnet twice to win the regional title and advance to the Division III College World Series. The top-seeded and host Red Dragons, 35-12 overall, were eliminated from the tournament with their second loss. Cortland had beaten Baldwin Wallace University earlier in the day, 10-9 in 11 innings, to earn the right to play Southern Maine.
Down 8-3 heading into the seventh, the Huskies made the Red Dragons pay dearly for an error to score five unearned runs, all coming with two outs. Senior Kyle Heath (Westbrook, Maine) plated the first run with an RBI single. Sophomore Anthony Degifico (South Portland, Maine) drove in the second run with a single. Rookie Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) tripled to left center to score Heath and Degifico. Quintal plated Troiano with a single to tie the score.
Cortland responded with two runs in its half of the frame to regain the lead. Junior Marcos Perivolaris (Mattituck, N.Y.) brought home both runs with a single to left field.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Huskies needed two runs to force the game into extra innings or see their season come to a close. The Huskies loaded the bases on singles from Degifico and Troiano, and Quintal being hit by a pitch, before sophomore Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) doubled down the left field line to score pinch runner Ben Lambert (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Troiano.
In the 10th, Heath and junior Kaleb Bridgham (Minot, Maine/Poland Regional) had back-to-back singles. Troiano moved both runners up a base with ground out to third base to set the stage for Quintal.
Junior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) picked up the win with a combined 3 2/3 innings of relief work in two stints on the hill. Senior Mike Harrington (Glens Falls, N.Y.) suffered his first loss of the season after eight wins for the Red Dragons giving up four runs in 2 2/3 innings. Cortland outhit Southern Maine 18-17.
