Huskies’ Jake Dexter Named D3baseball Preseason First Team All-American


GORHAM, Maine – Senior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' baseball team has been named to the 2019 D3baseball.com Preseason All-American first team.  

            A two-time American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-American (2018, 2017, Dexter was also a D3baseball.com First Team All-American in 2018.  The Huskies' starting second baseman, Dexter also filled the role of relief pitcher earning multiple citations as a utility player for the Huskies.  With his back-to-back honors from the ABCA, Dexter became just the 11th player in USM's storied history to earn multiple All-American citations in his career.   His 2018 D3baseball.com All-American honor earned him the title of the 10th Husky player to be honored by the organization's All-America program since the program began in 2007. 

            During the 2018 season, Dexter was a standout in all facets of the game batting .382 with 13 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 30 RBI.  He also had a .511 slugging percentage, a .429 on-base percentage and was successful on seven of nine steal attempts.  

            Dexter's proficiency on the mound established Southern Maine records for saves in a season (13), and saves in a career (26). Making 25 appearances, all in relief in 2018, Dexter compiled a record of 5-4 with 13 saves and a 2.44 earned run average.   The right-hander worked a career-high 44 1/3 innings, allowing 37 hits, 15 runs (12 earned) and 11 walks while striking out 47.  

            Dexter earned numerous honors during his junior campaign, including 2018 Little East Conference Player of the Year, and first team All-LEC at second base and relief pitcher.  He was also named to the ABCA Division III New England All-Region and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England first teams as the utility player.  In addition to his 2018 All-American honors from D3baseball.com, he was selected as the New England Region Player of the Year.  

            Southern Maine finished last season with an outstanding record of 30-15, and a berth into the NCAA Division III New York Regional, is ranked 18th in the 2019 D3baseball.com Preseason Poll.  The ABCA Preseason Division III poll has the Huskies ranked 12th.
